At Ivy & Onyx, clean beauty is not a trend, a fear-based message, or a claim placed on packaging without explanation.
It is a standard we use to guide every product we develop.
Skincare and body care become part of our everyday lives. We massage these formulas into our skin, breathe in their fragrances, keep them beside our sinks, and return to them morning after morning. We believe the ingredients inside them deserve careful consideration.
That does not mean reducing ingredients to categories of “good” or “bad.” It means looking at the purpose of each material, the way it is used, the available research, the quality of the finished formula, and the standards followed throughout development.
For us, clean beauty begins with responsibility.
Clean Beauty Without Fear
Beauty has increasingly become filled with alarming language.
Ingredients are often isolated from their concentration, method of use, or place within a complete formula. Scientific terms are presented as something inherently dangerous, while ingredients described as natural are automatically assumed to be safer.
We do not believe either approach tells the whole story.
Everything is made of chemicals—including water, plants, minerals, and the human body. Likewise, botanical origin alone does not guarantee that an ingredient is suitable for every person or every formula.
The safety and performance of a cosmetic product depend on more than the reputation of one ingredient. Concentration, exposure, formulation, product type, stability, preservation, and intended use all matter.
Our goal is not to make you afraid of what may be inside another product.
It is to be clear about what is inside ours.
Guided by European Cosmetic Standards
Ivy & Onyx products are developed with European Union cosmetic requirements as an important formulation benchmark.
The European Union’s principal framework for finished cosmetics is Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009. It establishes safety, ingredient, labeling, manufacturing, and market requirements for cosmetic products and includes annexes identifying substances that are prohibited, restricted, or permitted only for particular uses.
The framework does not simply divide every ingredient into universally safe or unsafe categories. Restrictions may address concentration, product type, exposure area, labeling, or other conditions of use. The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety reviews relevant scientific information to inform regulatory decisions.
In the United States, cosmetic companies are also legally responsible for the safety and proper labeling of their products. Most cosmetic products and ingredients do not undergo FDA premarket approval, with color additives being an important exception, although the FDA can act against products that violate applicable law.
We look to the EU framework not because a location alone determines whether a formula is thoughtful, but because its structured system of ingredient restrictions, safety assessments, and product requirements reflects the level of care we want behind Ivy & Onyx.
Our Standard Begins With the Finished Formula
A blacklist can communicate part of a brand’s philosophy, but it cannot evaluate a complete product.
A beautifully formulated cleanser requires ingredients that remove buildup without leaving the skin feeling depleted. A water-based cream requires an effective preservation system to protect the formula from microbial contamination. A botanical extract must be used at an appropriate level and incorporated into a stable product.
This is why our clean beauty standard considers the finished formula—not only individual ingredient names.
We evaluate products through several questions:
- Does every ingredient serve a meaningful function?
- Is the formula suitable for its intended use?
- Has it been developed with appropriate safety and stability considerations?
- Does it perform as promised without relying on exaggerated claims?
- Does the texture, fragrance, and application make the product something people will genuinely enjoy using?
Clean beauty should never require us to compromise the quality, integrity, or safety of a formula.
Botanicals and Science Belong Together
Ivy & Onyx is rooted in botanical tradition, but we are not interested in romanticizing nature at the expense of science.
Plants contain remarkable aromatic materials, oils, extracts, waters, and compounds. They also carry histories shaped by culture, place, agriculture, and generations of use.
Modern cosmetic science helps us study those materials more carefully. It allows formulators to consider purity, concentration, compatibility, preservation, stability, and how a botanical behaves alongside the other ingredients in a product.
Our formulas may pair plant-derived ingredients with modern skin-supporting actives such as panthenol, sodium PCA, betaine, hyaluronic acid, or urea. We do not believe one side diminishes the other.
Botanical tradition inspires the ritual.
Science helps us formulate it responsibly.
The Ivy & Onyx Commitments
Cruelty-Free
Ivy & Onyx products are developed without animal testing conducted for cosmetic purposes.
The European Union has prohibited animal testing for finished cosmetic products since 2004 and has progressively implemented bans covering cosmetic ingredients and the marketing of cosmetics tested on animals for cosmetic purposes. The broader interaction between cosmetics rules and chemical-safety requirements remains complex, which is why we avoid reducing cruelty-free commitments to a single regulatory statement.
Our commitment is straightforward: we do not want beauty to come at the expense of animals.
Vegan-Friendly Formulation
Our formulas are developed without animal-derived ingredients except where a clearly disclosed exception may apply, such as responsibly sourced beeswax.
We believe transparency matters more than using broad language that may obscure the composition of an individual product. Ingredient lists and relevant product attributes are provided on each product page so customers can make informed choices.
Complete Ingredient Transparency
Every Ivy & Onyx product includes a full ingredient list.
We do not hide cosmetic ingredients behind vague expressions such as “proprietary blend.” Fragrance components may appear according to established cosmetic-labeling conventions, but the complete required ingredient declaration will always be available.
European cosmetic regulations require ingredient labeling on cosmetic packaging, including specific disclosure requirements for regulated fragrance allergens.
Transparency does not mean that every customer needs to become a cosmetic chemist. It means you should have access to clear information about the product you are purchasing.
Purposeful Formulation
Every ingredient must contribute to the product.
Some ingredients cleanse. Others hydrate, condition, preserve, stabilize, emulsify, adjust texture, support fragrance, or protect the quality of the formula over time.
Not every ingredient needs to be a headline botanical to be important.
Our standard asks that each ingredient earn its place through purpose, performance, safety, or the overall sensory experience.
Responsible Production
Our manufacturing and formulation partners are selected with quality, responsible production, and environmental consideration in mind.
That includes attention to sourcing, manufacturing practices, efficient development, product stability, and packaging decisions. We also recognize that sustainability is not a finished achievement. It requires continued evaluation as better materials, production methods, and packaging options become available.
Respect for Biodiversity
Botanical beauty depends on living ecosystems.
Plants cannot be treated as an endless decorative resource. Responsible botanical formulation requires attention to sourcing, cultivation, environmental pressure, and the long-term availability of natural materials.
We seek to work with ingredients and partners that support responsible sourcing while remaining open about the fact that environmental responsibility is an ongoing process—not a perfect claim.
What We Choose to Leave Out
As part of the Ivy & Onyx Clean Beauty Standard, our products are formulated without several ingredient categories we have chosen not to use.
Parabens
We formulate without parabens.
This is an Ivy & Onyx formulation decision rather than a claim that every legally permitted paraben is unsafe in every context. Regulatory bodies continue to evaluate cosmetic preservatives according to the available evidence, permitted concentrations, and intended use. The FDA notes that parabens are used as preservatives in cosmetics and continues to publish information about their regulatory and scientific status.
Our formulas use alternative preservation strategies selected for the needs of each product.
Phthalates
Our formulas are developed without intentionally added phthalates.
When fragrance is used, we require it to align with our ingredient and formulation standards, including our decision to avoid phthalates and synthetic musks.
SLS and SLES
Our cleansing formulas are developed without sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate.
We use alternative cleansing systems selected to provide effective cleansing while supporting the sensorial experience and intended skin feel of the product.
This does not mean every sulfate-containing product is automatically harmful. It means these surfactants are not part of the formulation direction we have chosen for Ivy & Onyx.
Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
We do not formulate with formaldehyde or intentionally selected formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.
Preservation remains essential in products containing water. Removing one preservation system does not remove the need to protect a formula from contamination, so suitable alternatives must be chosen and evaluated carefully.
Benzene
Benzene is not used as an intended ingredient in Ivy & Onyx formulas.
Contamination concerns are different from intentional cosmetic formulation, and responsible manufacturing requires quality controls designed to protect the integrity of raw materials and finished products.
Silicones and Siloxanes
Our products are formulated without silicones and siloxanes as part of our chosen product philosophy.
Silicones can perform useful cosmetic functions, including improving slip, texture, and water resistance. Our decision is based on the sensorial, formulation, and environmental direction we want for the collection—not on the suggestion that every silicone is inherently toxic.
Synthetic Dyes, Coal Tar Pigments, Carbon Black, and Talc
We do not formulate our skincare and body care products with synthetic dyes, coal tar pigments, carbon black, or talc.
Where color naturally appears within a formula, it may come from its ingredients rather than from color added solely for visual effect.
Color additives are regulated differently from most other cosmetic ingredients in the United States and generally require FDA approval for their intended cosmetic use.
Synthetic Musks
Our fragrance standards exclude synthetic musks.
Fragrance is an important part of the Ivy & Onyx sensory world, but it must be developed within the same considered framework as every other part of the formula.
What “Natural” Means—and What It Does Not
We love botanicals.
We study their histories, celebrate their aromatic character, and explore the meaningful roles they can play in skincare, body care, and fragrance.
But natural does not automatically mean non-irritating, sustainable, effective, or appropriate for every person.
Essential oils and botanical extracts can contain naturally occurring fragrance allergens. A plant ingredient may be unsuitable for sensitive skin. A natural material may place pressure on an ecosystem when sourced irresponsibly. A synthetic alternative may sometimes provide greater stability, consistency, or environmental efficiency.
Our standard does not ask whether an ingredient sounds beautiful.
It asks whether it belongs in the formula.
Why Preservation Is Part of Clean Beauty
Preservatives are sometimes discussed as though their absence automatically makes a formula purer.
For water-based skincare, the opposite can be true.
Creams, cleansers, serums, and other water-containing products may create an environment in which microorganisms can grow if the formula is not properly protected. An effective preservation system helps keep the product suitable for use throughout its intended life.
The European cosmetic framework includes a specific list of preservatives permitted for cosmetic use and the conditions under which they may be used.
We do not believe responsible clean beauty means avoiding preservation.
It means choosing an appropriate preservation system, using it correctly, and ensuring that the complete product is developed with safety and stability in mind.
Fragrance With Intention
Fragrance is deeply connected to Ivy & Onyx.
It can transform washing the hands into a pause, a shower into a transition between parts of the day, or lighting a candle into a change in atmosphere.
We do not treat fragrance as something to hide, nor do we assume every customer wants it in every product.
Our collection makes space for both aromatic and fragrance-free formulas. When fragrance is included, it is selected as an intentional part of the product experience and must meet our formulation standards.
We also provide fragrance notes and aromatic profiles so customers can better understand the experience before choosing a product.
Transparency Beyond the Label
An ingredient list tells you what is present.
Education helps explain why it is there.
That is the purpose of the Ivy & Onyx Botanical Library.
The library explores the botanicals, modern actives, and fragrance materials found throughout our collection. It considers their history, character, cosmetic function, and place within a finished formula.
We believe understanding an ingredient creates a more meaningful relationship with the products we use.
It also allows us to have more honest conversations—ones that leave room for nuance rather than relying on fear, trends, or sweeping promises.
Clean Beauty Is an Evolving Standard
Science continues to develop.
Regulations change. New research emerges. Better ingredients, packaging materials, and manufacturing practices become available. The European Commission maintains and updates its cosmetics framework and ingredient annexes as scientific and regulatory assessments evolve.
For that reason, the Ivy & Onyx Clean Beauty Standard is not meant to become a static statement that we publish once and never reconsider.
We will continue reviewing our products, ingredients, sourcing, packaging, and standards as the collection grows.
Responsibility requires the willingness to keep learning.
