Ivy & Onyx did not begin with a product.
It began with curiosity.
I have always wanted to understand why certain ingredients work, why particular fragrances remain connected to memory, and why some products become part of our lives while others are quickly forgotten.
Long before there was a botanical house, there was a young person growing up in Angleton, Texas, fascinated by beauty, transformation, and the way seemingly small acts of care could change how someone felt.
That curiosity eventually became a career. Years later, it became Ivy & Onyx.
Beauty Was Never Only About Appearance
My earliest understanding of beauty was not rooted in perfection. It was rooted in possibility.
Makeup could reveal a different side of someone. Hair could become a form of identity. Skincare could provide comfort, confidence, and a moment of quiet in the middle of an otherwise demanding day.
As a licensed cosmetologist and makeup artist, I learned to see beauty as both artistry and service. Working directly with people taught me that a product is never only a product. It becomes part of someone’s morning, their preparation for an important moment, or the way they begin to feel like themselves again.
That human connection has remained at the center of my work.
More Than a Decade of Beauty Education
For more than ten years, I have worked as an educator within beauty and personal care.
My career has allowed me to train beauty professionals, support retail teams, create educational programs, and work alongside brands with distinct perspectives on skincare, makeup, wellness, and product innovation.
But teaching always begins with learning.
Before I could explain a product to someone else, I needed to understand it myself. I studied ingredient functions, formulation stories, product claims, application techniques, and the research supporting what a formula was designed to accomplish.
I learned to translate complex information into something people could understand and actually use.
That process became one of the most meaningful parts of my career: taking the language of ingredients and science and turning it into education that could help someone make a more thoughtful choice.
Learning From Artists, Educators, and Experts
I have been fortunate to learn from people who have dedicated their lives to their craft.
Throughout my career, I sought out advanced education wherever I could find it. I attended workshops, traveled for training, and learned from makeup artists, brand educators, product specialists, and industry experts whose experience extended far beyond trends.
Some lessons were technical. Others were creative. Many changed the way I thought about beauty entirely.
I learned that artistry requires discipline. Education requires humility. And expertise does not come from knowing everything—it comes from remaining curious enough to keep asking better questions.
That belief continues to shape Ivy & Onyx.
The Space Between Botanicals and Science
I have always been drawn to brands that refuse to treat nature and science as opposing ideas.
My appreciation for Botanics came from its focus on bringing botanical ingredients into conversation with modern cosmetic research. The plant itself mattered, but so did the way it was identified, studied, extracted, and incorporated into a formula.
I was similarly inspired by BYOMA and its accessible focus on skin health and the skin barrier. At a time when skincare was often becoming more complicated, its message reflected something I deeply believed: more products do not always create healthier skin.
These brands approached beauty differently, but both reinforced an idea that would become foundational to Ivy & Onyx:
Botanical tradition and modern formulation can belong in the same ritual.
Nature offers extraordinary ingredients, histories, textures, and aromatic experiences. Science helps us understand how ingredients function, how formulas remain stable, and how products can be developed with greater intention.
Ivy & Onyx exists in the space where those two worlds meet.
Research That Began With Education
My interest in botanicals deepened while creating educational programs.
A single ingredient name was rarely enough. I wanted to know where a plant grew, how it had traditionally been used, what part of it appeared in a formula, and what modern research could responsibly tell us about its role.
That research changed the way I experienced products.
Rosemary was no longer simply a fragrance note. Juniper became more than a familiar evergreen aroma. Urea, panthenol, sodium PCA, and hyaluronic acid became part of a larger conversation about hydration, comfort, and skin-barrier support.
Every ingredient contained another story.
The more I studied, the more I wanted to create a place where customers could explore those stories without being overwhelmed by technical language or persuaded by exaggerated claims.
That desire eventually became the Ivy & Onyx Botanical Library—a growing archive of the botanicals, active ingredients, and fragrance materials found throughout our collections.
A Thoughtful Approach to Clean Beauty
The phrase clean beauty can mean many different things.
For Ivy & Onyx, it is not a language of fear. It is a commitment to thoughtful product development, ingredient transparency, and responsible decision-making.
In developing our products, I look to the cosmetic requirements and restrictions established within the European Union as an important benchmark. This provides a clear framework for evaluating ingredients and reflects the level of care I want associated with everything carrying the Ivy & Onyx name.
Following a standard, however, is only one part of the process.
A formula must still be effective. It must remain stable. It should feel beautiful on the skin. Its fragrance, texture, packaging, and purpose must work together. Most importantly, it should earn a meaningful place within someone’s routine.
Clean formulation should not simply tell you what has been left out.
It should help explain why everything else belongs.
Why Ritual Matters
After years of working in beauty, I began to recognize a difference between a routine and a ritual.
A routine is something we complete.
A ritual is something we experience.
The action may be the same: cleansing the skin, applying a serum, washing the body, lighting a candle. What changes is the intention we bring to it.
I did not want Ivy & Onyx to encourage people to perform longer, more complicated routines. I wanted to create products that made familiar moments feel more considered.
The scent of cardamom and ginger rising through warm water.
The feeling of a rich cream softening dry skin.
The quiet shift in a room after a candle is lit.
These moments may be small, but they are not insignificant. They can help us slow down, reconnect with our senses, and return to ourselves.
Creating a Botanical House
When Ivy & Onyx began taking shape, I knew I wanted it to become more than a collection of products.
I wanted to build a botanical house: a place where skincare, body care, fragrance, art, and education could exist together.
Each formula would have a purpose.
Each fragrance would create an atmosphere.
Each botanical would be given space to tell its story.
And each collection would invite the customer into a larger world rather than asking them to purchase another isolated product.
That philosophy now lives throughout Ivy & Onyx—in the Botanical Library, the landscapes behind our atelier fragrances, the rituals that guide product use, and the thoughtful balance of botanical ingredients and modern actives within our formulas.
From Angleton to Ivy & Onyx
There is a meaningful distance between Angleton, Texas, and the world I am building today.
But the beginning is still present in everything.
The curiosity that started there never left. It followed me through cosmetology, makeup artistry, retail, education, workshops, airports, classrooms, brand launches, and years spent helping other people understand beauty.
Ivy & Onyx is not a departure from that journey.
It is the place where all of it finally came together.
It holds my love of artistry, my respect for education, my fascination with botanicals, my belief in science, and my desire to create moments of care that feel both beautiful and meaningful.
The Story Is Still Growing
I am still learning.
I still find myself immersed in ingredient research, studying unfamiliar botanicals, examining formulas, and asking what could be made more thoughtful.
That curiosity is not something I expect to outgrow. It is the foundation of Ivy & Onyx and the reason this Journal exists.
